Background of the study
Religious beliefs significantly shape societal attitudes, and in many communities, they contribute to the stigmatization of specific groups. In Ijebu North East, single mothers frequently experience religious-based stigma that marginalizes them socially and economically. Traditional interpretations of religious texts often label single motherhood as deviant, reinforcing negative stereotypes and exclusionary practices (Adewale, 2023). Such stigmatization affects not only the self-esteem and social standing of single mothers but also limits their access to economic opportunities and social support. Contemporary studies reveal that religious narratives can perpetuate gender inequality and social exclusion (Fashola, 2024). Recent observations underscore the persistent challenge of reconciling conservative religious norms with modern social values (Ibrahim, 2025). This study examines the extent and impact of religious-based stigmatization on single mothers, exploring its implications for social inclusion and empowerment in the community.

Statement of the problem
Despite progressive social changes, religious-based stigmatization of single mothers remains prevalent in Ijebu North East. Negative religious narratives contribute to the marginalization and exclusion of single mothers, adversely affecting their social and economic opportunities. Although various social policies aim to promote gender equality, the enduring influence of religious beliefs continues to hinder efforts toward acceptance and empowerment. The lack of comprehensive studies on the role of religion in perpetuating stigma has resulted in a gap in targeted interventions. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the religious factors that contribute to the stigmatization of single mothers.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess the extent of religious-based stigmatization of single mothers.
  • To analyze the role of religious teachings in perpetuating stigma.
  • To recommend strategies for reducing religious-based discrimination.

Research questions:

  • What is the extent of religious-based stigmatization of single mothers in Ijebu North East?
  • How do religious teachings contribute to this stigmatization?
  • What measures can reduce the impact of religious-based discrimination against single mothers?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Religious teachings significantly contribute to the stigmatization of single mothers.
  • H2: There is a positive relationship between religious-based stigma and social exclusion.
  • H3: Interventions addressing religious narratives can reduce stigma against single mothers.

Significance of the study
This study provides critical insights into the intersection of religion and gender-based stigma, informing policymakers and community leaders. By highlighting the role of religious teachings in marginalizing single mothers, the research aims to promote social inclusion and equitable opportunities. The findings will guide the development of culturally sensitive interventions to combat religious-based discrimination in Ijebu North East (Ogun, 2024).
